Support

A Nod is an iPhone app for keeping track of the books, films, shows and podcasts people recommend to you, and who recommended them. This page answers the questions that come up most, and tells you how to reach a person when it doesn’t.

A Nod is made by one person, so replies take a day or two rather than minutes. Every message is read and answered.

If something is going wrong, three things make it far quicker to sort out:

  • What you did, and what happened instead of what you expected.
  • Your iOS version, from Settings → General → About.
  • Your A Nod version, shown at the bottom of the app’s Settings screen.

A screenshot is worth more than a description, if the problem is something you can see.

What A Nod Needs

A Nod runs on iPhone, on iOS 18 or later. There is no iPad or Mac version yet.

Sync uses your own iCloud account. There is no A Nod account to create, and no password to remember.

Logging a Recommendation

Someone tells you about something. You log what it was, who told you, and why they thought you’d like it. A Nod fills in the cover and details afterwards, so you don’t have to look anything up in the moment.

There are four ways in, and they all reach the same place:

  • In the app. Tap the add button.
  • From the share sheet. Send a link straight in from Messages, Safari, Podcasts, or anywhere else that shares a URL.
  • With Siri. Say “Log a recommendation in Nod”, or name the kind up front with “Add a book to Nod” or “Log a TV show in Nod”. Siri asks for whatever it still needs. There is nothing to set up first.
  • From a widget. Add A Nod’s widget to your home screen for a one-tap way in, and a view of what you’re partway through.

The kinds you can name out loud are book, film, TV show, podcast and album.

iCloud Sync

Sync is a single switch in Settings, under Your data. When it’s on, your library lives in your own private iCloud storage and appears on your other iPhones signed in to the same Apple Account. When it’s off, everything stays on the one device.

Turning it on or off takes effect after you quit and reopen the app. This is deliberate. The store is opened once at launch, and switching modes underneath a running app is how libraries get damaged.

If you see “Sync isn’t running”: A Nod tried to start sync this launch and couldn’t. The usual causes are being signed out of iCloud, having iCloud Drive turned off, or having no network since launch. Check Settings → [your name] → iCloud on your iPhone, then quit and reopen A Nod. Nothing is lost while sync is down. The app keeps working on-device and catches up once it reconnects.

Sync is not a backup. It mirrors your library between your own devices. Deleting something on one device deletes it everywhere. Your iCloud backup is what protects you from losing the lot.

Trying A Nod, and Unlocking It

A Nod is free to try for seven days, with everything open.

After seven days, everything you have already saved stays yours to browse, search, and follow through on. What stops is adding new recommendations, which needs a one-time unlock. It is a single purchase through the App Store. There is no subscription and nothing auto-renews.

To unlock: Settings, then Unlock.

Already paid, on a new phone or after reinstalling? Settings, then Restore purchase. Purchases are tied to your Apple Account, so there is nothing to transfer by hand. If Restore doesn’t find it, check that you’re signed in to the same Apple Account you bought it with, and write to us if it still doesn’t appear.

Tips are entirely optional, for people who want to give more than the unlock price. They unlock nothing, because there is nothing left to unlock.

Books and Hardcover

By default, book details come from Open Library, and A Nod asks it for nothing but the book.

If you use Hardcover, you can connect your own account instead, in Settings under Books. Two separate switches govern this, and both start off:

  • Connecting an account lets A Nod read book details through Hardcover.
  • Sending your status is what writes to your Hardcover shelf. Until you turn this on, nothing is ever written.

Only your follow-through status and reading position ever cross the wire. Who recommended something, why they did, your notes, and what you thought of it are never sent to Hardcover, in either direction.

You can disconnect at any time from the same screen. Your library in A Nod is unaffected.

Contacts

A Nod can read your Contacts to make it faster to attach a recommendation to someone you already know. It is optional, and the app works fully without it. You can add people by typing a name.

When you do grant access, the lookup happens on your device. A Nod reads only a name, nickname, and thumbnail photo. It never reads phone numbers or email addresses, and your contact data is never transmitted anywhere.

Siri and Spotlight

Two switches in Settings, under Your data, control what A Nod makes searchable from outside the app:

  • Let Siri and Spotlight find people by name.
  • Let Siri and Spotlight find individual recommendations.

Turning either off removes that material from the index immediately, not at some later point.

Deleting Your Data

Delete all data lives in Settings, under Your data. It removes every recommendation, person, and verdict. If sync is on, it clears your iCloud copy too, and the confirmation tells you which it is about to do. It cannot be undone.

Your unlock is not a piece of data and survives a wipe. Restore it any time from Settings.

Deleting the app from your iPhone removes the local copy. If sync was on, your iCloud copy remains until you delete it from iCloud storage settings, or reinstall and use Delete all data.

Privacy

A Nod has no account, no server of ours, and no analytics. What you save stays on your device and in your own iCloud.
